Transferring songs to my lg shine w/ a USB cable necessary?

Do I really need the USB cable to load songs on to my LG SHINE? Can't I just drag and drop songs by just puting my micro SD card into an adapter, then plugging the adapter into my computer? Wouldn't that work just the same as using a "LG" USB cable?
