I have a question about The Prestige movie?

After Hugh Jackmans Wife dies he keeps asking Christian Bale what kind of knot he tied around her hands. Why couldn't Hugh Jackman figure it out because her hands were still tied when he got to her. Why couldn't he, Christian Bale or Michael Cain looked down and seen what kind of knot it was. I loved the movie besides this one part, please explain.
